It is generally said that the only two things that Belgians are proud of is the Royal Family and the national football team. Everything else depends on whether they are Flemish or Walloon.
For example, I have lived in Flanders 25 years and my 40 year old stepsons have lived their whole lives here. None of us has ever heard of the Monkey in the Grand Place of Mons and I'm the only one of us who has even been to Mons (or Bergen as we call it!)
