Apartment Insurance
Hi - we are in the process of buying an apartment and it's unclear to me (even after talking to the bank) how insurance works in Belgium. The building has a "police global" and we take out "contents" insurance.
My lack of understanding is what happens in the grey area between contents and building. For example if a washing machine leak damaged parquet that we installed would the "police global" cover this?
It is standard practice in Belgium to be responsible for taking out a minimum "contents' insurance.
If the bank cannot provide you with sufficient explanation, maybe consider purchasing the insurance elsewhere, perhaps from a broker who can explain in more detail?
One example from personal experience... We once suffered a partial ceiling collapse (old building) which apparently stemmed from a hidden leak in the shower above. Our broker first tried to cover the repair via the 'police globale'. When that failed, they used our contents insurance and that was successful. The repairs were fully covered. Hope that helps!
