Belga Gold: Belgium launches country’s first gold coin

20:17 26/03/2026

Belgium has introduced its first official gold investment coin, marking a new step in the country’s approach to private gold ownership.

The coin, known as the Belga Gold, has been launched by the Royal Mint of Belgium in response to growing international demand for precious metals.

Unlike other commemorative coins, which are typically aimed at collectors, the Belga Gold is designed specifically as an investment product, at a time where gold and other metals are increasing in value, aligning Belgium with a broader global trend.

According to Giovanni Van de Velde, chief executive of the Royal Belgian Mint, the initiative reflects increasing interest in gold as a safe haven asset, reports RTBF. “More and more countries are seeking to meet the growing demand for gold,” he said. “With this coin, we want to offer an alternative to the Belgian public.”

Gold has traditionally been seen as a stable investment during periods of economic uncertainty, and many countries already issue their own bullion coins for investors.

The Belga Gold distinguishes itself from previous Belgian issues, which were primarily commemorative and not intended for circulation or investment. By contrast, the new coin is directly linked to the value of gold on international markets. “The price is constantly adjusted according to this price,” Van de Velde explained.

It means the coin’s value fluctuates with global gold prices, making it comparable to other well known investment coins such as the South African Krugerrand or the Canadian Maple Leaf.

Although the Royal Mint of Belgium has a long history of producing coins, Belgium has not previously offered a dedicated gold investment coin to the public. The launch of the Belga Gold reflects a shift in strategy, positioning Belgium within a competitive international market for precious metal investments.
