Belgian Citizenship
Hi! I am planning to request Belgian citizenship. I have now lived here permanently 5,5 years (I am an EU citizen already). The law will however change starting from next year. According to the new law, there will be a 5 years option (for integrated candidates – I believe I meet these requirements) if I have understood it correctly. Does anybody know, if this so to say 5 years option goes through the commune, or does it go through the “Belgian naturalization”-process?
at the moment you could apply for naturalization and it will take a good two years before you get any answer due to the large backlog of applications currently pending. But in 18 months you will complete your 7th year in Belgium and at that stage you could go through the declaration process at your commune and it will take only 4 months to have an approval or denial.
I chose the first process and then switched to the second as it was easier and quicker (but I didn't know at the begin), however you can only apply for one process and have to cancel the other.
It is more or less up to you to decide what you think is more convenient; I was also EU with safe income, property etc etc but it didn't speed up the process at all.
