Belgian prisoner costs nearly €125 per day

A Belgian prisoner costs society €124.81 per day, according to federal justice minister Koen Geens. The minister calculates that Belgium's 11,091 prisoners in 2013 cost the country approximately €505 million, or €124.81 a day.

Geens also provides a detailed breakdown of the cost: €103.32 per day went to personnel and security personnel, €9.27 to general expenses such as energy, education and clothing for personnel, €6.68 to medical and psychological assistance, €5.08 to food and maintenance, and €0.48 to transport costs. Additional costs, such as for building maintenance and activities for the prisoners, were not included in the analysis.
