Belgium’s Foreign Minister travels to Iran to strengthen diplomatic ties
Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders spoke of working toward a renewed trust Sunday after he met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran. Didier was visiting Iran in an effort to strengthen the two countries’ relationship in light of ongoing nuclear talks. The moderate Rouhani has been working hard to create trust between Iran and the West in order to ease international sanctions that have put a stranglehold on the economy.
Iran has seen a steady stream of EU foreign ministers paying visits over the past two months, with Italy’s Emma Bonino and Sweden’s Car Bildt also making the trip to open dialogue. The visits have come after Iran agreed to freeze some parts of its nuclear programme in November in exchange for sanction relief.
