Bottled water versus a filter

What do most people here do for drinking water? Obviously tap water is not safe to drink so we have been buying bottled water. Would it make more sense moneywise to just buy a water filter? And if so, what type of filter would you recommend? Are Brita pitchers, for example, as efficient as the ones that attach to your faucet? Or is changing filters a big hassle and expensive on its own?
