Bringing a car from Italy

Question

Dear xpats,

My friend (italian nationality) he is going to move to Bxl from Italy to work here in EU. He got a car (registered in italy) and he is thinking to sell it here in Bxl after moving.

My respective questions are,

1. Does he has to pay anything to here local community to register the car in order to use it here?

2. Incase if my girl friend wants buy the car she has to pay the import tax and so on?

3. Does it worth to buy it as a foreign car?

Please if someone can kindly advice me with relevant information we would highly thankful!!

J

1. Annual circulation tax and 1st registration tax.

2. No import tax on a 2nd hand car. On a new one (less than 6 months old), you pay VAT

3 You mean bring it here, run it on Italian plates for up to 3 months and then flog it at trade price to a Romanian or Bulgarian car exporter? You'll have to work that one out yourself.

4. Insurance.

1. He is free to use the car here until he registers it as a Belgian car. Legally he has to do that within 6 months though many people do not do that and, in any case, there are special rules for EU employees. If he registers it as a Belgian car he will have to have a special CT done in order to register a foreign car. He will also have to pay the annual car tax plus the cost of registering it for the first time.

2. If your girl friend buys the car as a Belgian car she will have to pay the annual car tax plus the cost of registering it for the first time; in other words, exactly as if she bought any second-hand Belgian car.
If she buys it as an Italian car she will also have to get the special CT done in order to register a foreign car and will take the risk that the car might fail.

3. Obviously it depends on the price. She will have the cost and inconvenience of registering a foreign car. On balance I would say that it isn’t worth it.

It really isnt that much hassle to register a car here if it is yours -- If you then decide to sell it here -- you would get a better price if it was belgian registered. Italy is in EU - so no import taxes on bringing your own car here. (You have less hassle than bringing one from the UK as you do not have to worry about changing the headlamps.
