Brussels Aquarium to close in new year

Brussels Aquarium will shut down on 7 January, with management saying they are "exhausted by the fight" to keep the place running.

The attraction, which is tucked away next to Koekelberg basilica, has been open to the public for 12 years and boasts more than 250 species of fish and amphibians from all over the world. Where they will end up is not yet clear.

Bruzz reports that the Aquarium has seen its subsidies cut in recent years by almost two thirds, from €81,000 to €29,000.

"The obstacles were numerous and the hurdles got higher and higher. Today we can't reach them," said Aquarium director Danielle Roose and head of conservation Pierre Demol in a joint statement.

"We do not regret anything - we put in all our heart, all our courage, all our energy, seven days a week."
