Bruxelles Propreté organises 'spring clean' campaign

08:55

Brussels' public hygiene department, Bruxelles Propreté, is organising a spring cleaning campaign that aims to involve citizens, schools, associations and companies in keeping the region clean.

The "Wake-Up Clean-Up" initiative will run from 20 to 23 March, tackling litter to make the city a more pleasant place to live.

Wake-up Clean-up invites citizens, schools, sports clubs and associations to borrow a cleaning kit and to clean the city en masse for four days.

Individuals, associations, companies and organisations that want to participate in the spring clean-up can register on the platform wakeupcleanup.brussels.

So far, more than 200 people have decided to lend a hand, including two schools, several companies and many individuals.

The intention is that each participating group organises its own clean-up, each with its own departure point and drop-off point for the collected waste and rubbish.

“The routes, planned on the platform, will be different for each group, but the clean-up actions will all take place between 20 and 23 March for maximum impact,” the agency said.

During last year's initiative, citizens cleaned up a total of 1,350kg of waste in a total of nine Brussels municipalities. The Wake-up Clean-up movement hopes to do at least as well during this year’s edition.

In another effort to tackle litter as the weather gets warmer, the mobile recycling parks are returning from now until 27 June.

These serve as collection points for bulky items, objects and waste on more than 100 dates in 14 municipalities.

“A notable feature of this 10th edition is that more than half of the participating municipalities will offer, in partnership with social economy actors, to give a second life to the objects brought back,” Bruxelles Propreté said.

For the 14 participating municipalities, containers will be temporarily installed to collect certain types of waste at various locations throughout the area.
