Can I keep my Belgian driver's license when I leave?
I have a Belgian driver's license on the basis of my US driver's license. My US license has expired and I cannot renew it, since I no longer live at that address. I also do not have the appropriate documents to get a new license at another US address.
I am about to take a new job in France that would require me to drive during business trips, so it is important that I have a driver's license SOMEWHERE. When I de-register in Belgium, will they allow me to keep my Belgian driver's license, or will I have to turn it in at the town hall and take my now-useless American license back?
Not really sure, an EU photo licence is now valid to drive anywhere in the EU, without having to change to the licence of the country. BUT you'll have to de-register with the commune, that might have consequences as to the validity of your Belgian licence (just imagining some Belgian concocted rule). Maybe you can take your Belgian licence to France and exchange it there for a French one, in the same way as you would have exchanged your US one. I suppose the only was to find out your answer is go to the commune office, ask what is likely to happen when you de-register.
