We would like to donate our car to a family in need and are not quite sure what information local authorities will request. Could anyone advise? Thank you!

If they can afford to run (petrol, insurance, parking) a car, then they're not really in need.
Sell the car, and give the money to a suitable charity.
That way, you help more people who really are in need.
