Car towed after garage parked it illegally

Question

I gave my car (along with the only set of keys) to my local garage for repairs, but instead of puting it in his workshop, he parked it (illegally) on the street - apparently in front of a pedestrian crossing. It was towed by the police and the garage is refusing to pay to get it back. The towing bill is growing by 10 euros/day + VAT and will soon exceed the value of the car. What to do?

Contact your insurer and ask them how to make a claim against the garage's professional liability insurance.

Whether or not you can claim from the garage owner, you should pay up and get it back. If you have a means of getting your money back well and good, if not you are only giving yourself more to pay by leaving it where it is.
Even if you have a claim against his insurance, they will not pay for any time after the earliest that you could have reclaimed the car so that, too, means that it makes sense to act now.
A wild stab in the dark says that the garage owner won't give you your keys back until you pay him as well so do that and then get yourself a second set of keys!
