Cohabitation in Belgium

Question

Hello everyone! I was just wondering if anybody knows what the laws in Belgium are like as far as the cohabitation is concerned.
My partner and I moved in together (he just made the change of address) and I would like to know how it works in the event of a break-up for the assets that we gain while living together. More to the point: if I am buying something substantial through my own financial means (completely independent of him), would it be split in half in the event where we part ways?

Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Since you are cohabitating rather than getting married, the division of your assets is not governed by the courts. If you buy something, keep the receipt so you can prove it. If you rent the home (or own it) do not add his name to the lease/mortgage. if you buy something together, use your name rather than his - although it is rather depressing to think you are preparing for the split already.
