Commemorative plaque adorns drainpipe where Hungarian MEP fled sex party
A commemorative plaque has been placed on a Brussels drainpipe used by a Hungarian conservative MEP to flee police.
József Szájer made world headlines last week when he resigned for attending an orgy with about 20 other men at a central Brussels apartment, in breach of the coronavirus rules on social contacts.
Four Hungarians living in Brussels have placed a plaque outside the building, in Hungarian and English, reading: "The political career of József Szájer, member of the European Parliament for Fidesz and the European People's Party ended here."
It adds that Szájer "tried to escape authorities using this drainpipe after participating in an ecstasy-fuelled orgy during the Covid-19 pandemic on 27 November 2020".
The plaque, on Rue des Pierres, has quickly become popular with Brussels residents, with reports of small groups of people gathering in front of it to have their photo taken.
Szájer, a member of Viktor Orbán’s far-right Fidesz party, admitted last week that he was present at the party above the gay bar in downtown Brussels.
Police served Szájer with a procès-verbal for possession of illegal drugs. In a statement, Szájer said he knew nothing about the ecstasy.
"I did not use drugs," he wrote. "I told the police that they could give me a drug test, but they declined. Police said an ecstasy pill was found. It’s not mine, and I don’t know who put it on me or how."
