Question

Hello,

I registered at the police station confirming my move into a new residence from one commune to another within in Brussels. I am already a resident in Belgium for many years.

I am expecting a letter from the commune to come and finalize the registration, eg. get my ID card updated, but I have now waited close to 1.5 months and haven't received anything. Fyi, this is Brussels commune

Have I misunderstood something, eg. do I need to go to the commune in person and not wait for a letter of invitation?

yes, you missed something - please register directly at your new commune ASAP. they will deregister at your former commune. No police this time involved.

Thanks. Well, I already registered the move online. What do I need to bring to the commune? I am working and going there is a hazzle so I rather avoid having to go twice

Your current ID card plus the rental agreement for your new home. Once the police have satisfied themselves that you actually live there (make sure your name is on the bell-push and the letter-box), the reregistration process will commence. Assuming that you aren't a Belgian citizen, don't expect anything to happen quickly, especially in Bruxelles Ville commune.

In the meantime your official address will remain where you lived before so make sure that you have postal redirection set up.

Thanks. The issue is the police have already been here. They left a note for me to come to the police station to finalize their control. I did this and they said they would inform the commune which I trust they have. However, since then I've been waiting for a letter from the commune to finalize it

However, I am tired of waiting so I will try my luck at the commune and see how it goes

If you are in 1000 commune, do not trust communication via e-mail. I did the same mistake some time ago waiting for a reply from them and lost almost a year of legal residence. Just go there and solve everything on the spot. I know it is wasting the time but it is more efficient.
