Cowboy e-bikes investigated over racing game
The Brussels public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into e-bike manufacturer and seller Cowboy, and specifically a new racing game added to the company’s app for bike users.
The app incites cyclists to race against each other in 500-metre sprints, which the prosecutor's office called “irresponsible and dangerous”.
“The road safety of Brussels residents and daily passers-by visiting the capital is an absolute priority,” the Brussels public prosecutor said in a statement.
Melanie Van der Horst, Amsterdam's alderwoman for mobility, has already banned the game in the Dutch capital.
Van der Horst cited worries the app could lead to “life-threatening situations” because it would distract cyclists from other traffic.
Belgian road safety institute Vias also reacted to the app’s release with concern.
Cowboy has since decided put the game on hold to investigate its safety, while also stating that participants were always urged to use the game in a safe environment.
