Dog ownership in Belgium
What sort of insurance is required for owning a dog in Belgium and where is a good place to get it at a good price? Also, where are dogs allowed to go in the Brussels- can you take your small obedient dog into a shop or supermarket, or into restaurants or cafes or museums? Is there a list of dog friendly places where dogs can go? Where are good off leash places for a doggy to run around? Thanks a lot!
I do not believe that such an insurance is mandatory, but I highly recommend a private liability insurance, offered by nearly all banks and insurance companies. It covers accidents caused by family members and pets (always double check when siging the contract). The total price should be somewhere between the wide range between 50 and 100 euro per year, so definitely worth it.
Dogs are less allowed in museums and restaurants, better verify in advance before heading somewhere with your dog.
Kind regards,
Pet liability is included in the family liability policy which you need to have even if alone as it covers you for damages you may be responsible for (non contractual) both physical damage and bodily injury.
You turn around and hit an old lady who falls and breaks a bone.
You push someone and he drops his computer which smashes
Your dog bites a runner
Your kid hits a car when driving his bicycle.....
Price is about € 75-100 / year depending on coverage you want.

Second liability insurance as laid out above - an accident with my former dog involved a dammage of over 9,000 EUR (and a killed dog).
Restaurants / Cafes visits with a dog - depends on their policy.
Museums - no.
Supermarkets etc. - no longer allowed, for me totally correct.

Many restaurants seem to have dog friend policies even for larger dogs especially if they have terrace area. We have to tell our commune (overijse) if we own a dog or a horse
Most parks and the Forrest require that dogs are leashed howevereople do ignore this it seems but it's not legal. I know of a dog park pit by old heverlee where one can let them of but I'm not familiar with the city.
