First capsule hostel opens in Antwerp

09:04 25/09/2014

Belgium’s first student hostel with capsule beds opened this week in Antwerp. The Antwerp Student Hostel (ASH) provides the minimum of accommodation: the cheapest formula is a bed in the form of a capsule, long and wide enough to sleep in (pictured).

Each capsule is soundproofed and air-conditioned, and a locker and access to showers is included in the price. For claustrophobes, conventional bunk beds are also available at a bit of a higher price.

The capsule concept was invented in Japan, where it fit the needs of office workers who just needed a bed for the night in the city. ASH is targeting students, however, both local and overseas, from an overnight stay to whole semesters or years.

The hostel has a choice of room sizes, from a pod for €25 to an “XXXL”, measuring 36 square metres and costing €699 for a month. Prices for larger rooms include private bath, wi-fi and use of study and games rooms. But even the large rooms are no frills: Guests have to provide their own linen and a chair to go with the desk. There is a communal kitchen, but guests must provide their own utensils.
