Gender pay gap persists in hospitality industry
The Brussels catering federation is raising awareness about the sector’s gender wage gap with the launch of a cooking competition for women.
Called ‘Be Cheffe’, this November marks the second year in a row the competition will be held, Bruzz reports.
Women represent about 47% of the total workforce in the hospitality sector, according to the catering federation, but are still much less present in management positions and only 4% of the world's top chefs are women.
The Institute for Gender Equality also calculated that the gender pay gap can be as high as 20% for a similar job.
The ‘Be Cheffe’ competition allows women participants from all across Belgium to cook two recipes for a jury of five experts and win prizes, while at the same time highlighting the gender disparities in the culinary world.
Five finalists will be selected from all entries in three categories: entrepreneur, employee and trainee/student.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 25 November and will receive a cash prize from a pool of €10,000.
Registration for the competition is still open until 31 August and is free of charge.
The previous edition attracted more than 50 participants.
