Has anyone been successful with a long term retirement visa?

My father would like to apply for a long term retirement visa to come and live with my family. He has his own money and such. The reason is he would like to be close to the grand kids and such and stop living alone. Anyone had any luck applying from the states? My husband and I are both Belgian nationals. He doesn't qualify for family reunification as we don't support him.
