How to access retirement fund?

Question

Hi, I have a somewhat urgent need for funds! I had thought I could cash in my retirement (insurance) fund, but am now told the Belgian law has changed and it's now not possible until I'm 60 - in 3 years' time.

Is there perhaps any banker or other lender that will loan me funds if I sign over all rights to my pension funds?

Having been in a similar situation to you a while back, I think it's unlikely. There are a whole range of tax problems with it. At least, that's what my bank told me at the time. Also, the banks are very reluctant to take a pension fund as security, as they may not be allowed to take it if you end up not being able to pay the loan. There is a legal duty of care on the banks to be able to show they took care when they lent you the money that you could pay it back without leaving you destitute.

You could always try and get a personal loan from your bank.
