How to open a barber shop in Belgium?

Question

Hi, I have been thinking about opening my own tiny barber shop in Belgium. Problem is, I have no idea of how to go about doing it.

Can someone tell me what are the steps (legally/ formal) to open a small business.

I am married to an EU citizen, the commune told me I don't need to apply for a special work permit like most foreigners from outside the EU.

I will give a free haircut to anyone with info when my shop is set :D

In order to set up a company in Belgium you'll find a registered office is necessary, as well as a business bank account at a Belgian bank and a local accountant are all required.

Here's some information.

Hairdressing is a "registered" profession, so the first step would be to get your qualifications recognised.

Hi J,

If I were to open a nail salon, is being a manicurist also a registered profession? Thank you for your response, sorry if I sound stupid - I am new to this.

Hi please be aware that in order to open a business you need to speak a local language well, they may well require you to pass some Kind of test. Also you need to know how to keep books. Filing an incorrect tax return you get a big fine. Maybe go and work for someone first there maybe people who will let you work independently hire a chair so to speak. I'd also seek professional advice not just from a bunch of X pats but people who actually know about these things.

Barbering I think falls under the vestigingswet (establishment law). You need to show that have passed the required exam (basic accounting, social insurance, etc.) to start the business. Your next step is to contact your social insurance company (one of the three), and these also have information leaflets explaining what you must do. After becoming self-employed you also have to apply for a VAT number. These days there are various grants on offer meant to encourage people to start their own business, there are also reductions on your social insurance payments during the first years available.
