Impact of UK in/out referendum in Belgians living in UK
Hi, Is there any clarity on what the impact will be on Belgians living in UK if UK votes to exit? May be those living in UK before 23rd June or till 31st December 2015 or till 31st December 2016 or from 23rd June 2015 or ... will be allow to live in UK as before without restriction, whereas restrictions will be imposed on new ones from a cut-off date? What that cut-off date could/will be? Cheers
Nobody knows.
Indeed, nobody knows. However, common sense suggests that beyond a certain date the UK will want to start to decide who can and cannot come and live in the country. The trouble is the EU may still put up a fight on that one even if the UK leaves.
Regardless, I think suggestions that established tax paying residents are going to be thrown out of their family homes and sent packing back to where they came from are more than a little hysterical.
The impact, whether the U.K. votes in or out is likely to be minimal. There are thousands of other non-EU citizens, Americans, Russians, Australians, Chinese, Norwegians etc. all living and working in Belgium. All that will happen is that you'll have to do a little more paperwork to get your residence permit. The idea that Belgium will be kicking out all U.K. residents because they're not part of the EU is ridiculous. Belgium is already in enough of an economic disaster zone, they're not going to make it worse.
Sorry I didn't read your question properly before. You're asking about Belgian's living in the U.K. Well the answer will be the same, there are plenty (i.e. hundreds of thousands) of non-EU nationals working and living in the U.K. It's highly unlikely that anything will change for you either way.
