independent social costs ..
I have been an independent for 5 years. My 3rd year was a(unusually) very good year in terms of income. Due to the unique way they calculate social security payments in Belgium, it means that the 3rd year becomes the reference year for not only that year, but for year 6 also. i.e. next year for me.
So it means next year I will have to pay a huge amount of social security, even though my income is much less than it was 3 years ago. It does seem very unfair I get a double whammy for 1 good year.
Of course I know it probably futile, but is there any way to contest/appeal against paying the calculated amount for next year ? As I don't feel like spending half my income on social costs based on income I never actually received. Also, is there any information out there about the reforms for this system ?
1. Have you sought professional advice yet, like from your accountant? And?
2. The Belgian state pays exceptionally good rates on over-payments.
3. Yes. If you're having a really shit time, you can put you payments off by 9 months (don't quote me on that), but my accountant said not to bother.
4. "very unfair I get a double whammy" and equally unfair you get the tax refund that goes with it.
.
Long term, you win.
