Korean contemporary dance evening at KVS on 16 April

Korea’s national contemporary dance company (KNCDC) performs a double bill of two dramatic and emotional works by new-generation choreographers at KVS Bol on 16 April.

Organised by the Korean Cultural Center in Brussels, the show kicks off the center’s cultural programme that celebrates the 60th anniversary of Korea-EU diplomatic relations in 2023.

The two new works are by talented and experienced Korean choreographers. Jaeyoung Lee, who presents Mechanism, is a founder member of the SIGA dance collective. Sungim Her, who has created Everything Falls Dramatic, enjoys a European reputation as a former dancer in Belgian companies Les Ballets C de la B and Needcompany.

In Mechanism, six dancers create an intense pattern of intricate synchronised movement. Shifting between the parts of a machine, members of a tribe, and solitary individuals, the choreography plays with our understanding of ‘human interaction’. It’s accompanied by a, increasingly tense, pulsating and rhythmic score by MC Bluechan.

Meanwhile, Everything Falls Dramatic explores disappearance and death, offering a meditation on human fragility, resilience, loneliness and solidarity. The six dancers perform sinuous movements to present contrasting scenes of free and casual abandon as well as defiant energy and affection. A sound score by electro-acoustic duo HuskHusk only adds to the emotion.

The world-renowned KNCDC returns to Belgium after a highly-praised performance of Immixture at the Varia theatre in 2017. Established in 2010, the dance platform aspires to create performances that tell stories of history, society and daily lives, which can be appreciated across regions and by all generations.
