Leaving

We are leaving Belgium for 2 years, going to the United States. We own a house here, and my husband's employer is based in Brussels, he gets his salary paid in a Belgian bank account, etc.
The commune told me that we have to give up our residency and. Give back our ID cards ( carte de séjour). We have been given contradicting advice from them in the past, each person tells you something different etc.
So I wonder how I can double- check this, is there a website? I haven't found it.
