Lost document on applemac

Question

Please help
I have been working on a word document (using open office) on my macbook air, been saving the content regularly. I'm not sure if it was saving to my laptop or flashdrive, the latter which I pulled out this morning and now I can not trace back the document at all. I have looked in thrash, scrolled all documents and files, switched everything off an on. but no sign of the document.
What the heck has happened? Has anyone an idea how I can retrieve it? I dont even mind losing the bit of work I did on it this morning which was not saved if I can get back to the previously saved version. I thought with an Apple this kind of error would be a thing of the past.

First things firsy, go to the top right hand corner of the screen and click on the little magnifying glass icon (the spotlight).

Type in the start of the document name and see if it finds it.

I don't use Open Office, so I can't help you there, but can you not do a file > open recent to see if the file is stil available fro your workd processing package?
