Major traffic disruption for Brussels ring E411 Leonard intersection from 3 March

12:26

The busy Leonard intersection of the Brussels Ring Road will be reduced to one lane of traffic for drivers heading into the capital from 3 March, reports La Dernière Heure.

“The traffic centre (Verkeerscentrum) predicts that travelling time will be longer than normal,” motorists have been warned. Two lanes, though, are open to traffic from Brussels in the direction of Namur and Luxembourg.

These roadworks to the beleaguered junction will continue until the end of 2025. A complete closure had been scheduled for May, but a change to the agenda of the ongoing works has brought forward the latest phase.

However, from 1 March, the Flemish administration announced that it would reopen the ring tunnels during the day. Work will continue to be carried out at night with the E411 and ring tunnels closed on weekdays until 5.30.

Two tunnels exist under the Leonard intersection, one for traffic coming from the E411, the second for traffic using the Brussels ring road (R0). Each tunnel is made up of two tubes and they date from 1970s and 80s.

A complete renovation of both tunnels began in April 2023 and will ensure they can be used intensively for the next 30 years, said the regional agency. According to the current schedule, the work in both tunnels will be completely finished by the end of 2025.
