Marriage
hi, I didn't get any responses to my previous post, so I will try again.
I am getting married and I need to obtain a document that proves that I have not been married whilst living in Belgium - I have already received one from my homecountry. I assume that I need to go to the commune to obtain this(Brussels). Anybody can advice what the procedure is?
Thanks in advance for all responses
Ask the church what they want! D'oh.
If I remember correctly, when I got married here in Belgium I ask my home country for the doc and had to have it legally translated. I don't remember asking the commune for another one. But I'm fuzzy on the details. Either way, your best bet is to call the commune and ask. I hope all goes well!
p.s. I think you need to contact the Service de Population for those types of questions.
You cannot actually get married in Church here as you have to have been married in your local Commune first then you have a blessing service in the Church of your choice. You need a Certificate Celebatairé to marry here which proves you are not married, you willl get this from your own consulate, the British one charges 67€, or did when my daughter married last year, After the civil service the commune will give you a certificate to show to your chosen Church to prove your are legally married and can have the blessing service. Lots of luck in your married life.
I had to get a document from the British Consulate concerning my marital status. I don't remember if that was because I was divorced but necessary it was. Give them a ring.
Hi I got married last year. We had to go to the consulate and swear that we were not married. If you go to the relevant town hall they will pencil in a date and give you a list of all the documents that you need. We were married in B-1000 and they were incredibly nice and helpful
Hello
Just got this document a few weeks ago. As a Brit I had to go to the British Consulate here, and make a 'statutory declaration' that I am single and have not been married nor entered into legal partnership. The consulate/or dep. then signs it. Costs around 70 euros.
My partner had to do the same in the Indian embassy here (although the procedure on the day was more chaotic than the British experience :-) )
For neither did we have to get an attestation from the commune in which we are residing in. ( they will do an automatic check when they process your request to get married)
