Hi Guys,

Just moved to Brussels and looking to register with the commune. I have a web design work contract for i year with a company in London. Do i need to get Social security or just medical insurance? Where can i get it?

Thanks

Your question is not very clear. But if you thinking about yur one year contrzct in the UK, you dont really have to worry about medical insurance there. The NHS (National Health Service) in the UK will trat you for free, no matter your nationality.

In Belgium its different, you will need health insurance, unless you got yourself an E111 form from your country of origin (assuming its EU). Or else you can buy "private" health insurance from, for example, DKV.

I am a British national and I'm currently in Brussels. I have the European Health Insurance Card EHIC - formerly the E111 form. Does that mean that i don't have to buy private" health insurance?
I am looking to stay in Belgium for 9 months.

Thanks

The EHIC card is intended for people making temporary visits to other countries within the scheme. As you are intending to stay in Belgium for more than 3 months (you say 9) you are required to register at the commune where you are living, and a requirement of the registration process is that you have suitable health insurance arrangements in place. If you are employed (and you won't be allowed to stay for 9 months if you aren't financially independent), you should join a mutuelle. You can obtain documents from the National Insurance people in the UK to give to the mutuelle which should ensure that you don't have to endure the normal stage of 6 months before the cover becomes effective.
