More than 13,000 on waiting list for bike parking in Brussels
Demand for bike parking in Brussels continues to rise, with 13,175 people currently on the waiting list for a spot.
Parking.brussels has already installed 72 new bike boxes but is struggling to keep up with the rising demand for secure bicycle parking, Bruzz reports.
In addition to the secure bike boxes, the city has also added 212 subscription-based spaces for bicycle parking in eight new neighbourhood car parks, along with another 158 spaces through public-private partnerships.
This brings the total number of bicycle parking spaces to 5,542, with 6,897 subscribers. The vast majority use the bike boxes and neighbourhood car parks, while others leave their bikes in large underground car parks and at Park & Rides.
Parking.brussels said it was working on additional spaces. The 2022-2026 management contract between the Brussels government and parking.brussels cites a goal to create 21,250 new secured bicycle parking spaces during the period.
Of these, 10,000 spaces (including in bike boxes or shared car parks) will be set up on behalf of parking.brussels. There will also be 7,000 and 4,250 spaces respectively commissioned by the SNCB and Stib, with support from parking.brussels.
Meanwhile, the regional parking service is also developing several sustainable subprojects, such as the "share your garage with your neighbour" initiative, which allows residents to offer an unused, secure space to their cycling neighbours, for a fee.
