More cohabitants splitting up
Last year in Flanders, 46,894 people signed a statement of legal cohabitation, a slight increase compared to 2013. But at the same time there was also a sharp increase in the number of cohabitation terminations, up to 24,434 in 2014, or 3,000 more than the previous year, according to figures obtained by MP Koenraad Degroote (N-VA) at the request of interior minister Jan Jambon. The same trend was observed in Brussels and Wallonia.
"While the number of divorces has gone down in recent years, there has been a substantial rise in the number of terminated cohabitation statements," Degroote told De Zondag. "This is due to the fact that it is very easy to do so. If the couple is in agreement, they can simply report the termination free of charge at their town hall."
