Moving out of Property. Paint or not

Question

Hallo,
We will be moving out of our rented accommodation on the 1/November after been living there for 3 years and 5 month.
Do we have to paint the whole house before passing it back to the landlord?
Our handyman say yes. Our next door neighbour had everything painted when she moved out 3 month ago. Her company paid for it so she did not even questioned it. The bill was over 2000 Euros, but our Canadian friends did not do any painting at all when they left, only filling in holes in the walls where pictures had been hanging. And our British friends have just told us that we don’t need to do any painting just a high level of cleaning and that is also what our cleaner have just been telling me.
We are really confused about this issue. If any of you have any recent experience we would really appreciate your comment/knowledge/experience.
Is there a website we can get advice from?
Thanks,
LL

Do not paint. No way. It's the landlord's responsibility.
