Moving a pet parrot to the US

Question

My family is moving to the US (Seattle) with our pet parrot in a few months. The parrot is Panama Amazone (CITES 2), one-year old, bred in Belgium with a certificate from the breeder. Can someone help me to find an agent who would arrange CITES clearance for both exportation and importation, quarantine as well as the actual transportation? I have been in contact with the Belgian federal service, but am struggling to receive the promised response...

A few years ago I brought my guinea pig pet from the US to Belgium. Some airlines allow pets in the cabin on overseas flights, as long as it is in an airline approved carrier and fits under the seat. I my case, the only airlines that accepted small pets in the cabin with me was Delta Airlines. They allowed 2 pets total in the cabin all together. On my flight there was also a small dog in the cabin, so with mine that made two. You have to make special reservations and it costs extra. We even split up taking different flights because the flight my husband had to take would not allow pets in the cabin and he had to arrive at a certain time. I flew separately with Delta. A parrot is small enough to fit under the seat. For some airlines I guess it matters what kind of animal it is, when I checked around for example, Lufthansa said 'no way' because it was a guinea pig.
In your case, I would go about it differently. I would check with the airlines, they can tell you exactly what you need to board in Belgium. Then I would check wherever you have your first stop if it is not a non-stop flight and ask what is required. Medical certificate etc. Good luck!

Thank you. This is very helpful indeed and I will check with the airlines.
I wonder if anyone had the experience of transporting a pet from Belgium (esp. to the States)...

Hi you also need to ask the state you are arriving in what the import process is. We have shipped cats to the UK a few times mostly via a shipping agent but years ago, once for a friend on that occasion because the vet didn't write the timing of a shot on a form the airport forced her to pay the boarding cost for an overnight saty and refused to releases the cat until a certain time elapsed. So it's not just about leaving here it's also about a net the rules are there.

Thank you. What are those shipping agents? Do they specialize in transporting the animals, or do they move things as well as pets?
