Knokke-Heist transforms into a Scandinavian winter experience this year, combining a seaside escape with ultimate winter cosiness.

Revel in the dark of winter thanks to the chic Belgian coastal resort’s packed programme of seasonal activities. Embrace the cold in outdoor strolls along the seafront or in the pretty streets of the shopping district, elegantly illuminated by festive lights. Snap up some Christmas gifts in its original boutiques before warming up over coffee or Belgian hot chocolate in a cosy cafe.

For authentic Scandinavian atmosphere, visit the traditional wooden chalet The Pakjeshuis and a real Viking village with characterful decoration at De Bolle in Heist. Another highlight of the upcoming programme is the captivating Gueule d’Ours street parade by the internationally-renowned Compagnie Remue-Ménage from France.

Winter activities

Knokke-Heist is delighted to open a new seasonal attraction this year. The Pakjeshuis (The Gift House) on Frans Desmidtplein is an upmarket winter destination where visitors can have their newly-purchased presents expertly wrapped in beautiful gift packaging. It also offers an indoor experience, the Fjordland Children’s Village for three to 10-year-olds. After paying a deposit of €10, parents can drop off their kids while they head out for some stress-free shopping. When they return within two hours with a store receipt, they can recuperate the deposit. Don’t miss out on a photo opportunity with Santa or in a special photo booth. Kids can also write a letter to Santa, drop it into a mailbox and await a sweet surprise gift.  29 November to 5 January

Enlivening the traditionally quiet period between Christmas and New Year, the Gueule d'Ours street parade will form a procession from Avenue Lippens to Mayor Frans Desmidtplein on Saturday 28 December. During the street theatre show, you can marvel at luminous white bears, theatrical dancers and a master of ceremonies on stilts. The enchanting performance evoking a winter journey to the Arctic is staged as night falls and is illuminated by magical lights. 28 December 17.00-18.30

For anyone looking for a more adventurous experience, the De Bolle square in Heist is transformed into a Viking village. It promises a rugged Viking vibe, complete with tree trunk decor and national flags. As well as local food and drink stands, activities include traditional Viking games and children’s entertainment such as craft workshops and face painting. 29 November to 5 January
