30,000 teachers join protest march in Brussels

08:55 29/01/2025

The first day of a 48-hour teachers' strike in the French-speaking education system drew 30,000 participants on Monday, according to an official police count.

Teachers are protesting against the Francophone government's austerity plans and demonstrated at the MR and Les Engagés party headquarters before moving to the headquarters of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

“We clearly see that something is not working in education today,” one teacher said.

“Everything is falling apart. Our management has to make do with less and less, the buildings are in a worse and worse condition.

"I am ready to move to tougher action, because if we do nothing, it will be society that suffers."

The MR headquarters was cordoned off with barriers, but protestors threw eggs and fireworks at the building before doing the same to that of Les Engagés.
