Koekelberg imposes outdoor alcohol ban

09:21 06/08/2025

The municipality of Koekelberg has banned consumption of alcohol in several streets around Simonis metro station, its new mayor Olivia P’tito (Socialist) has announced.

With this measure, the municipal council wants to limit the problems and public disturbances caused by drinking.

The newly introduced measure will apply at all times until mid-September, and for any type of alcoholic beverage, according to the police ordinance introducing the ban.

Specifically, this concerns many streets and squares around Simonis metro station, such as Place Simonis and Place Vanhuffel and parts of the Chaussée de Jette, Avenue de Jette, Avenue de la Basilique, Avenue de la Liberté, Avenue du Château and Rue Sainte-Anne. The full list is available on the municipality's website.

Anyone who drinks alcohol on the street in this zone could receive a €500 fine from the commune, called a SAC – sanction administrative communale.

The ban does not apply to cafe and restaurant terraces in the targeted area. A similar ban was imposed in 2022, when offenders risked a lower fine of €350.
