Environmental permits sought for Brussels Airport expansion

10:36 12/09/2025

Brussels Airport has applied for an environmental permit for its largest construction project in 30 years - an expansion worth €500 million.

The airport presented the project in April under the name Hub 3.0. It includes an extension of the departure and arrival hall, the construction of a new intermodal hub, a hotel and an office building, and a green boulevard with a park.

The hope is to have the entire project completed by 2032 at the latest.

“Brussels Airport will offer passengers a completely new experience in the departure and arrival halls, with more space and light and a view of the operations on the tarmac,” said airport chief executive Arnaud Feist when presenting the plans.

“Additionally, we will also improve the interconnectivity between the various modes of transport, such as train, bus and the future tram, and provide more capacity.”

According to Brussels Airport, this is the largest investment in the airport since the construction of the current terminal and Pier B in the 1990s.

Preparatory work has already started and a new drop-off zone will be created at the departure hall, behind the Sheraton hotel.

A public inquiry is running until 5 October, during which objections or comments on the application can be submitted in the municipalities of Kortenberg, Machelen, Steenokkerzeel and Zaventem.

The application file is available on the website omgevingsloket.be.
