Declaration of nationality

Question

Hi,

I am a foreign national, eligible to apply for Belgian nationality by 'declaration' at the commune. The new law came into effect on the 1st of January 2013 and I meet all the criteria for the short procedure (5 years). This has also been confirmed by the commune official.

However, so far, I have been unable to submit my application as the commune doesn't know yet what documents are required under the new law. I have been there several times, but each time, the official tells me she is unable to accept any applications because she hasn't been given the list of documents that are required for the new applications. I am growing a bit unpatient, because I should be able to apply for it, by LAW. And 1.5 months is a bit much. She says nobody has submitted any such application yet, but I find it a bit hard to believe that the whole procedure has been frozen, throughout the country, because of purely administrative reasons that are not justified by law.

Does anyone know more about this or suggest a way forward?

Many thanks.

SIX WEEKS WAIT !!!! Thats nothing in Belgian terms, if you really want to become a Belgian, get used to their way of doing things pronto, or prepare yourself for therapy.
As for the LAW - remember "the law is an ass".
