Rich harvest for Belgium at World Beer Awards
Belgium has again fared exceptionally well at the annual World Beer Awards. The 2012 honours list crowned Het Anker Gouden Carolus Classic World’s Best Dark Beer, praising its “strong toffee flavour and raisins on the palate”. Mort Subite Oude Gueuze, meanwhile, whose “sourness builds in the mouth with creamy malt and a light hint of hops”, won the World’s Best Sour Beer prize. In the World’s Best Vintage Dark Beer category, Rodenbach Vintage 2009, with its “beautiful sherried notes”, was described as a “well-balanced and delicious” winner. Belgium’s most ‘niche’ award came in the shape of the World’s Best Gluten-free Lager trophy, which went to Brouwerij Huyghe Mongozo Premium Pilsner (pictured) and its “crisp, biscuit flavours”.
