Belgians want tighter road regulations

Belgian drivers want stricter road regulations at all levels – including for violations they admit to occasionally committing themselves – according to a study by the Belgian Institute for Road Safety. Road users are in favour of stricter measures regarding the validity of insurance documents (95% in favour), the installation of an ‘alco-lock’ for repeat drink-drivers (92%) and preventive breathalysing (91%). Only 64% of respondents would like to see more speed controls. Belgian drivers believe that there are three main contributing factors to lack of road safety: speed, infrastructure (the state of motorways, kerbs and road signs) and the behaviour of others. The study shows, however, that there is a certain amount of social permissiveness towards speed violations, whereas driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances represents the ultimate no-no.
