Smog alert ‘not enough’
Belgium
11:10 24/01/2013
A two-day smog alert is in place throughout Belgium, as air pollution has reached peak levels. In Flanders and Wallonia the speed limit is reduced to 90kph on motorways, while speed controls are to be increased in Brussels, where the limit is reduced to 50kph on roads where it is usually 70kph. Scientists point out that the measures are only temporary and do not fix the pollution problem. Antwerp physician and respiratory specialist Wouter Arrazola told De Gazet Van Antwerpen that while two days of action would help reduce pollution levels temporarily, only a sustained traffic-limitation policy would deliver lasting results.
