Customs/duty when ordering something from the US/Canada

Hi there
am thinking of getting a nice new laptop from Canada via ebay. Often people say to me that the postal service over here will only charge 10 euros, if even.
Anyone ever ordered something expensive from US/Canada and been hit with the full duty charge? (100 of euros I presume)
Or should I risk it?

I had to pay more when I ordered a camera from Canada.
Just expect to pay full tote odds and that way if it is less than the 21% and extra fees you wont have lost out.
They're probably correct. The postal service may only charge you €10.
What they forgot to add was that for imports from outside the EU, customs will also charge you 21% VAT.
