How long to settle with landlord?

Question

Is there a limit in Belgium on how long my landlord can legally drag out the final settlement of payments and deposit after I move out? I lived in an apartment for nearly 5 years, moved out 6 months ago, and paid what the landlord asked for the final charges within a couple of days. It turned out that what he asked for in the final bill was erroneous and I overpaid. Now he has been telling me for weeks that he has a revised bill, all he has to do is send it to me, but I still have not seen it.

What are my legal rights here? Would it help to get an advocat involved, or would an advocat be likely to tell me that Belgian law does not give me much protection in this situation?

Go to the website below and find your local Huurdersbond (renters union) office and take all your paperwork with you. You can become a member for 15 euro per year. They will take care of this for you.

We had a problem with our landlord demanding money from us he did not deserve. When in fact he owed us over 1000 euro. They took care of it for us and he paid us our money back. The huurdersbond is well worth 15 euro per year.

Thanks for your reply. I should have thought of the huurdersbond -- I was aware of them before, but when I moved I left Belgium and forgot about them. I will contact them and see if they will accept my membership even though I have left the country.
