Cancelling a car number plate?

Question

I just went to the post office with the intention of mailing my recently sold car number plate back to the DIV by registered post but the lady at the post office said no need - just drop it into the mail box and it will get dealt with free of charge.... So I did what she said and now I wonder if I will ever hear anything from the DIV? Have I done something stupid as randomly suggested by the woman at the post counter or is this the correct procedure? I can't find anything on the DOV website saying this is what you should do and knowing how random things can be in Belgium I wonder what will happen now.....?

Rico

I sold a car a few years back and dropping the plaque in the post box rings a bell.

If you wish to take your vehicle off the road (scrap your license plate), you must send your number plate to the DIV. If you have made the decision to scrap your vehicle, you should do this quickly as you will continue to pay your road tax until your license plate is cancelled.

You can return your official license plate (stamped on the back) to the DIV in two ways:

You can send your plate by post to the DIV – cancellation service, rue du Progrès 56, 1020 Brussels.
You can deposit your number plate in the box provided at the office counter or annex of the DIV.
