Geocaching

Question

This seems to be the latest craze for kids in Brussels- a kind of treasure hunt based on clues on a website where you go to a REAL place (Metro station for example) and follow the website clues until you find the 'cache'. My son is only ten and I am worried about his massive interest in this. It strongly motivates kids to go to a specific physical location to try to find the 'cache'. My son is not allowed to go beyond sight of our house on our own road, but the temptation to skip off to the train station to search for this stuff is now high. Is anyone else experiencing this and how are you handling it? I am very wary of who may be behind the placing of clues and 'cache'

I've seen something like this in the UK but have never seen children following the clues on their own, their parents or another adult are always with them. You could do this with your son too, he follows the clues and you're around to make sure he's ok. This way he gets to take part and you have peace of mind.
You could also look up and see who's running the website and contact them (if possible) and ask them to put a note on the site telling children not to go off looking for clues alone.

Hi,
We have been geocaching for about 2 years now. It is an activity you can do as a family along with the dog. It also gives us an opportunity to visit places in Belgium we have not been to before as well as a bit of exercise. It is a game more for adults than for children to do on their own. I would recommend starting with the simple geocaches and then to move on to the more complex ones or you would be disappointed.

I was going to say basically what Timzim said. It is really much more of a family activity. It is great for building an understanding of geography and some history.
