Where to buy car wheels?

Question

I am car newbie , never changed even wheels so far. Just learnt to change oil, jack the car and mount it on jack stands etc.

I have winter tyres but no spare wheels, simply collecting dust. Mounting/dismounting winter/summer times on the same wheels costs costs ~160 euro per year.

I am considering to buy spare wheels so that I can change the wheels myself. For Audi A6 2007, [A6 C6 Avant(2007], for my tyres 205/60 R16, found I need RIMs 7x16 ET45 with Bolt pattern 5x112mm & Thread size M14 x 1.5 witha centre bore size of 57.1 mm.

(1) Would it be a good idea to buy cheeper wheels for use with winter tyres and change the wheels myself for the season?

(2) Where could I buy cheap but reliable wheels, which is recommended, alloy or steel? (only to use for winter tyres and doesn't need to be fancy)

(3) Do I need a torque wrench? Hearing for the first time but what do I look for in buying a torque wrench?

(4) Is it obligatory to use winter tyres in Belgium(Brussels)? I hardly drive during winter (except for a 100~200 km ride, once in a blue moon)

What I have for 2 cars

Standard steel wheels - one set I got from a demolition yard -- another via kapaza (which came with practically new tyres (so that was a very good deal!)

I change the wheels over myself - you can use the car jack - But I prefer to use a good trolley one

Torque wrench, - I don't - but I have a an extending socket bar - I tighten to teh max of my strength - and then double check that can be undone! - I carry an extending socket bar in teh car - just in case)

I don't think it is obligatory to have winter tyres - However I drive a lot and Im further south than Brussels - For me they are essential and they do make a big difference - for someone who doesn't drive in winter - maybe not so.

If you have full spare sets of wheels - then you have to allow for the storage space

Hope this helps

Thank you Luke.

That was quite helpful. Started looking into kapazaa and 2ememaine. Are there demolition yards around Brussels? Could we just walk in and look fot tyres or are there any protocols? (Not sure if they are run by government or private)

Your certificate of conformity will state which tyres sizes are suitable (and you have the tyre spec on teh sidewalls of the tyres you have on. Whilst I would happily buy some wheels from a demolition yard - (having had a good look for damage first) I am not so keen on getting tyres from a scrapyard. (prefer to have new ones that I know are good)

I am far from Brussels - so can't advise on places -- but there must be many.

The ones I have visited though - you generally go to an office and ask if they have wheels for your car (or if you have phone numbers -- call which would likely save a journey!)

If you are not desperate -- look on the second hand sites -- I was lucky with one set that the wheels came with very good tyres -- for the other car -- I got the wheels from a scrappy and then bought the tyres.

Hi -- Apols - Ive just twigged you already have the tyres -- (I shoudl read more carefully :-)

another source of wheels - if you don't want to go second hand - would be an independant motor factor (car parts store) Ask them for teh price of steel wheels for your car (also ask Auto5 and Midas) to compare

€160 seems a bit steep for taking tyres off and on twice a year -- my local village tyre place charged €10 a wheel (inc balancing) (€80 per year for 4) that was a while ago though (before I got spare sets)

Thanks again Luke! You are quite helpful. Good that you referred me to COC.
Found my wheel size was 7JX16 ET35 (and not 7Jx16 ET45 , as I initially deduced from a website above). Still confused why Audi garage once gave me quote for 7J * 16 H2 ET42

Apparently that last two digits of ET seems the positive offset in mm. Not sure how will this affect mounting the wheels,. when COC says s 7JX16 ET35 , dealer recommends 7J * 16 H2 ET42 , a difference of ~ 10 mm.

BTW, Collected quote from Midas(450 euro for stell wheel, 550 euro for alloy), will do so from auto5, looking out at second web sites as well.

Still need to figure out if the offset ET35 or ET42 is that important.

Wheels are the focal point of any car. Therefore it is important to buy a perfect set of wheels for it. All auto parts cater the wide selection of wheels, however, only https://autopartsfair.com/wheels_rims/ accumulates quality wheels online for all car enthusiasts at discounted price. This website has a well established operation all around the world.
