Radar cameras credited for saving lives on Belgian motorways
A decrease in serious accidents along motorways in Wallonia is being attributed to the presence of radar cameras. Although not popular among all drivers, the figures show that lives are being saved because of them.
According to the statistics, the number of highway deaths in areas patrolled by radar cameras in Wallonia have dropped from 414 between 2004-2008 to 349 from 2008-2012. During the same period, serious accidents have also shown a decrease from 605 to 506.
Information panels along motorways will soon be updated to reflect the latest figures. Officials expect the signs to be up by the end of December.
However, some areas continue to be dangerous despite the presence of cameras. Traveling from Cheratte to Brussels along the E25 has been the most dangerous, with 57 accidents from 2008 to 2012.
