Relocation allowance or moving allowance (or both)?

Question

My question is simple. In your experience, is it better to have everything moved or to have a relocation allowance? I have no idea of the amount of a relocation allowance. What is it supposed to cover?
Thank you for sharing your experience.

If it is an either/or choice then you have to know what amounts are on offer and what the cost of the move will be. You then decide whether you take the money and do the moving work yourself.
I have no idea what a relocation allowance is supposed to cover but I'll take bets that it varies from company to company.
I've been used to having everything moved subject to getting 3 competitive quotes AND an allowance for settling in which is supposed to cover things which couldn't necessarily be moved from the old to the new home - curtains is the oft-quoted example though, of course, you can spend the money how you want.

Thank you for your answer. Actually, expat negociation has not yet started. This company is used to US expats coming to Europe but has only one record of European expat moving to the US. From what I have understood, they usually pay for moving stuff in a storehouse and give a relocation allowance. My concern is that I have absolutely no idea of what this should cover: beds+ furniture+ kitchen appliances+???
It is a good idea to ask for a budget based on moving quotes and things we'll have to buy and then use the money the way we want...
